People assume pro training is some locked vault: different exercises, different secrets, a system regular athletes never get to see.
It isn’t. Here’s exactly what changes when the athlete in front of me plays professionally, and what stays exactly the same.

The qualities never change
Game IQ. The ability to read the game. Ball handling. Speed. Strength. Power. Recovery. Flexibility. Reaction. First-step quickness. Every quality that actually underpins performance is the same at 13 as it is in MLS. That list doesn’t get more advanced for pros or simpler for kids. It’s the foundation of the game at every level.
The lens changes
What changes is what I’m looking for within those qualities, and why.
A professional doesn’t need me to teach him how to trap a ball or play a pass. At that level, that’s already there. What he needs is to keep closing gaps: position-specific movement on and off the ball, decision-making under match speed on the soccer side; capacity, volume, strength, power, and recovery efficiency between matches on the physical side. It’s refinement, not foundation.
With a youth athlete, I’m tracking growth, specifically where they are on their peak height velocity curve, because their main limiting factor is usually how efficiently they can use a body that’s still changing. That matters for pros too, just at a completely different resolution.
Same concept. Different method. The qualities that determine performance don’t change with age or level. How you test them, prioritize them, and act on them does.

What shifts once you’re getting paid to play
Beyond the lens, three things change once an athlete’s livelihood depends on their body.
Recovery windows shrink. You might play twice in a week with no real off-season. Every session has to account for what’s already been asked of your body, and what’s coming next.
The margin for error disappears. A youth athlete who’s slightly under-recovered loses a step in a drill. A professional who’s slightly under-recovered gets hurt in a match that decides a contract. That changes how conservative I have to be with load, and how much weight the data carries over how the session “feels.”
Decisions get faster — but not blind. Pro schedules don’t wait, so when a test flags something, the response has to be immediate. But a flag is an alarm, and like any alarm, it’s sometimes a false one. That’s where knowing the athlete matters most. Before anything changes, I’m talking to you, checking what else could explain it, not reacting to a number by itself. Once we’re sure, the plan changes that day, not next week.
Same system, different dial
None of that is a different system — it’s the same system with the dial turned to a different setting. The profile, the testing technology, the way I read the data: that’s identical for every athlete in the building. What changes is where the dial sits for where you are right now.
If you’re a professional — in season, between clubs, coming off an injury, or just tired of guessing where you actually stand — this is what a real assessment looks like. Not a generic combine test. The same lens I use with everyone who walks through the door, run against the specific demands of your position and your body right now.
